Schizophrenia And Relationships – Is It Possible?

If one half of a couple has experienced, is going through or has been through a psychosis, unfortunately the couple will go through a difficult relationship period. The relationship is tested during times of crisis and even more so during psychosis.

The relationship is headed for failure if: only one of the partners endures the entire burden; if the couple does not support and help one another; if there are many difficult disagreements between the couple; if, even prior to the psychotic disorder, the relationship was unsuccessful; and if the healthy partner is unwilling to invest and/or live with a person who up until now has been healthy and has suddenly been diagnosed with a mental disease.

The relationship will not work if the partner does not have the strength and energy to invest in this type of relationship or alternatively is not prepared to bring children into the world with a mentally ill partner. Often, unfortunately, relationships end as a result of psychotic disorders.

It is important not to fall apart, but rather to continue moving forward and to find a partner who will accept us as we are, providing us with support, equanimity, mutual help and most importantly – love.
