I’m glad that 2008 is behind us with its unwanted recession. I truly hope that we went over the top and now things would only get better.

I wanted to use this opportunity in order to inform you what I’m planning for the year 2009.

I defeated schizophrenia and its negative symptoms. I am Ronen David, 38 years old. A few years ago, I went through a number of psychotic episodes, which were also followed by a divorce from my first wife. In the initial months following the disorder, I was a wreck. I did not function; I was turned off. without feelings or motivation. For me, getting out of bed was a project akin to climbing Mount Everest.

Suffering from the medications’ side effects, I began eating and gaining weight and started smoking like a chimney. I stopped all physical activity, closed myself up at home, did not get out of bed, refused to perform simple tasks, and did not pay my bills on time. I stopped meeting friends and they stopped seeing me. I did not care about hygiene and was on a path that would certainly have led me to destruction. I understood the hard way that doctors load you with medication but do not teach you one very important thing – how to cope with the disease.

Through determination, a strong will to live, and support from those close to me, I decided not to give up, but to overcome the illness.

I buckled up and began building a plan of action on how to get the best treatment for Schizophrenia.

In time, I found, developed, and implemented methods to overcome the illness. Amongst others, I met a charming woman to whom I am now married; we have a daughter and live a fulfilled, happy married life. Amongst other things, I am chairman of Malam – a mental health consumers’ organization in Israel, I appear in the media often and I fight the stigma of psychosis. I am an academic busy completing my studies for a master’s degree. I am also an author, assist a host of self-help groups, and teach and lecture on successful strategies for coping with crises. I contribute a lot to the community of consumers and live a life that is happier and more fulfilled than the life I had before the crisis.
